Mark Reuss confirms that GMC will be getting their own model that will not share underpinnings with Chevrolet.

As we all know, GMC has always said they are the "professional grade" and are a premium compared to their Chevy brothers (average sale price says so too). In the past this hasn't really been reality, but finally with the 2015 midsize trucks do we see there actually being a difference. Upskirt both trucks are basically the same, save for the G80 auto-locking rear diff that will be found in the GMC Canyon but not the Chev Colorado. Exterior you'd have to be blind to not see the difference. Interior sure, looks the same, but the GMC kid will have better materials throughout and come standard with more toys (at a higher price too, of course).

When asked last week after the Canyon debut whether the market would someday see a non-Chevy GMC vehicle, Reuss answered: "Oh, yes, you will."

What do you guys think? One might assume the GMC Granite concept, which would be a pathetic vehicle to get excited for, especially for GMC. Luckily it was confirmed that the Granite would not see production.
Ute is a bit of a stretch, but we can hope to dream.
Maybe he shouldn't have been taken so literal. Maybe we'll see a Canyon based sport truck (Syclone?) with that lovely 3.6TT. Or maybe a mini-Raptor, let Ford have the $60k off-roader and GMC can take on the $40k price. Or maybe it's a Canyon based SUV.

Saddly I see it more likely for GMC to get a raptor fighter than a ute. That being said, a ute would be awesome.

Give us the Denali XT concept.

The ute is dead. GM won't retool a plant to start pumping out zeta platformed Commodore utes unless they decided to keep producing the sedan as well. The cost would kill it.

If they make a new Ute, it needs to be a Chevy. Because El Camino.

If the keep the Camaro on the zeta platform and not drop it to the smaller ATS platform that's been suggested, possibly. If they're still selling Caprices to the cops it makes a stronger argument, it just depends on much GM is willing to spend on building something as small volume as a ute in a pretty much untested market.

I heard that next gen Caprice is moving to Canada as Camaro is moving to the Alpha platform and is going to be built in Detroit.

I think a new Cyclone would be a fantastic idea but it would have to be a reg short box awd just like the original.

on a side note why can't I comment on the comments?

there's that rumour and speculation that carsales ran that GM want to continue the SS and are considering retooling in the US for that because GM does't want to lose it after only 3 years.

I won't believe it till they start rolling off the production line though.

I won't believe it till they announce an entire range of V6-V8 cars in sedan/wagon/ute format being lined up for the US market. Build the Commodore range in the US/Canada, export it to Australia and Europe as a non luxury brand. The platform is LHD/RHD designed so it just depends on if it's cheap enough and will sell enough to warrant production.

The SS needs to be retooled and not sold as a fully optioned out model. If they put a sub $40k variant on the market it'd sell out in an instant.

I knew it, but couldn't come up with the name, had to go look it up myself. But still, there could be a GMC exclusive UTE! Imagine how pissed people would be if there were a 'new' GMC Sprint but no El Camino!

I think my old "Yukon XL" should have just been called a Suburban. I called it a Suburban quite often, because it flows off the tongue better than YUKON XL and people know what you are talking about anyway.
